The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer

Author: Michelle Hodkin

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer is about a girl who wakes up after an accident that killed her friends. She’s the only survivor, but she can’t recall what exactly happened. When people around her start dying and memories start snaking their way into her dreams, Mara believes she’s going crazy. That is, until she meets Noah Shaw. Noah is the only person who seems to understand what happened to her – and maybe he knows more than he’s letting on.

Mara Dyer has the perfect mix of paranormal and romance. I loved the mystery of Mara’s accident. Even though I couldn’t relate to what she was going through, I was able to empathize. Mara was a funny, sarcastic, if not a bit pretentious at times, character. Her unwillingness to give up despite not knowing what was real and what wasn’t was a great asset to her character. Noah was a bit of the “bad boy” cliché common for YA books at the time it was written, but his own story line redeemed that. I loved the way Hodkin intertwined Mara and Noah’s stories and I can’t wait to read the rest of the series! The ending was completely unexpected with a smart twist. This is perfect for fans of Twilight.
