68 Knots

Michael Robert Evans

This edgy novel--about a diverse group of teens who commandeer a sailboat and support themselves by pirating during one summer full of adventure and discovery--is also a subtle yet powerful novel of awakening, of coming to grips individually on the cusp of adulthood.

_____

68 knots in a rope. Each knot represents a day of freedom. Each knot undone is another day of freedom gone. Who hasn’t dreamed of becoming a pirate on the High Seas? I found the story of these teens to be well done. There were teens from a wide range of backgrounds and personalities and they had to learn how to work together. They also had to learn how to work together when they didn’t get along - and I felt that was a powerful lesson.

I really enjoyed this book about teens coming together to learn about sailing, leadership and the lasting bonds of friendship. It (teens on their own) reminds me of “Downriver” by Will Hobbs
