Today I would like to recommend a book for our Junior readers. It is written by a beautiful young actress, Quvenzhane Wallis, titled "Shai & Emmie Star in Break an Egg". The audio version of this book is read by Quvenzhane herself!
I think our young readers will enjoy this story of friendship, competition and facing challenges. Shai and Emmie are both students at an Atlanta area performing arts school. Shai has two family members who are also actors/performers and she definitely has "star quality" and appeal. When a new student (Gabby) from Hollywood arrives, both she and Shai vie for the same part in the school musical.
I felt this book presented a believable scenario, complete with friendship drama and issues with resolution. The adults in the story offer kind wisdom that readers can take to heart and as they follow along the story, can imagine themselves immersed in the issues and think of ways they could resolve them.
I thought this book was fun, engaging and very well done. I believe it will resonate with its target audience of 3rd - 5th graders very well.
