Raven's Book Picks

"I Am Young"

by M. Dean

This graphic novel follows the life of a 2nd gen immigrant (Miriam and her daughter by proxy) and Her first love George. Using the hype and culture surrounding the legendary Beatles, we see the ups and downs of the relationship between George and Miriam, and ultimately their end. While it’s not my favorite tie-in, I did enjoy it, I loved the Beatles references and caricatures.

"I Survived the Sinking of the Titanic, 1912"

by Lauren Tarshis

First, I can’t express the importance of the Historically based graphic novels, it adds an element that allows full engagement with the past for younger readers (and of course for those of us who already love graphic novels and reading in general, this was mighty cool, even if you are looking for a more complex story). This one really gives you a full range of emotions, as we see the Titanic through a child’s eyes. Of course, as with all of the “I, Survived” stories, you get a heavy dose of actual history and wonderful references for further exploration. I would definitely recommend this book and series if you’re looking to engage a struggling history student.

"The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes"

by Suzanne Collins

Ok, so first things first, you will have more question and want more story after reading this. However, you will also have a better understanding of Snow and how he came to be. As an adult, the villains are never just the bad guy, they are never just evil for the sake of being evil. Snow follows that path. After reading this I find him to be a victim of circumstance and groupthink. Despite having read all 3 original Hunger Games books, I still held out hope for Snow. And per usual, Collins gives us some pretty darn good writing. READ, READ, READ this, and then reread the series.

"The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires"

by Grady Hendrix

This book was AMAZING!!!! Excellent writing, astounding character development. Hello world, American housewives are some pretty kick butt vampire slayers. There are so many social/cultural elements within this book it will make your head spin. You will laugh, you will be nervous, you will scream at characters and your children will look at you like you’re stark mad, and then you will thank me for this timely, hilarious, heartbreaking, and redemptive story. You’re welcome in advanced.
