Long Way Down

by Jason Reynolds

“The Rules weren’t meant to be broken. They were meant for the broken to follow.” This is probably one of the most dynamic statements I have ever seen in a book, especially within the context of this book, perhaps because of it, really. Reynolds, once again, has given our pre-teens and teens something to consider. He gives a look at a life we may not be familiar with or perhaps we have detached ourselves from the experience of those who are close to us who live a life close to this. Either way, this book is a visceral reminder that there is another side of life here in America, one that needs to be looked at and understood. It’s books like this that truly remind me how much of a gift it is to have literature. Books allow us a small peak into a world that we may be unfamiliar with, in hopes of making us all better human beings. Reynolds creates works that are changing the world through our children, and for that we should all celebrate because we could use a bit more compassion for each other.
