I Survived the Attacks of September 11th, 2001

by Lauren Tarshis

I Survived the Attacks of September 11th, 2001 is a book that tells the events of September 11th through the perspective of 11-year-old Lucas Calley. Lucas went into the city on September 11th, to go to the fire station where his Uncle Benny was working. Lucas was trying to get Benny to convince his parents that Lucas should get to continue to play football. When Benny and Lucas were outside talking, they saw the first plane crash into the North Tower. Benny took Lucas back to the Fire department to wait while Benny and the rest of the department went to the towers to evacuate people. After a while, Lucas gets restless and heads to the towers. On his way, he runs into his dad. Together they get to safety before the South Tower collapses. In the end, we learn that while many died Uncle Benny was alive and only injured. In the Author's Note at the end of the book, she shares that 2,016 people died that day. 343 of those were Firefighters, and 60 were Police officers.
