This one was a heartbreaker for me, both haunting and beautiful. This tale spans over 3 generations, from slavery to post civil war. A beautiful reflection of what it takes to build and nurture a community, and the devastation that freedom brought. I was almost immediately pulled in and frequently found myself falling in and out of love with her characters, at several points yelling “no don’t do it!” and “Oh my God, why?”. There was no putting this one down for me, I never would’ve thought of a “healer” wearing so many hats during that time. All hail the Conjure Women!
