Author: Cassandra Clare

Clockwork Angel is the first book in a trilogy called The Infernal Devices – a prequel series to the wildly popular Mortal Instrument series written by Cassandra Clare. From the very first page, you’re thrusted into the world of the Shadowhunters who have taken an oath to protect ordinary people from menacing otherworldly creatures. Tessa – a seemingly average human – has powers that are unexplainable for someone who is not a Nephilim. When she crosses paths with Will and Jem, Shadowhunters, her mystery becomes more than she could’ve expected.

The world-building is absolutely phenomenal. All of the characters are complex and well-rounded, including the secondary ones. My favorites were Will and Tessa. Will has such a big heart, but always tries to keep people out. Tessa is a bookworm, having always turned to stories for comfort which, of course, made her more relatable personally. Clockwork Angel also included a strong friendship between Will and Jem which was meaningful to read. The plot was action-based, but it also allowed plenty of room for characters to grow without diverting from necessary plot progression. Personally, I felt this series had more depth and better writing than the Mortal Instruments series that takes place after it. The writing is gorgeous and dedicated to detail which so many quotable moments. This is definitely good for fans of YA fantasy series – specifically Harry Potter fans.
