Amber's Children's Book Picks

Best Nonfiction: Winnie: The True Story of the Bear Who Inspired Winnie-the-Pooh by Sally M. Walker

This is one of my favorite books. I grew up loving Winnie-the-Pooh and having a children's book that actually talks about the real bear is awesome to me. Another cool feature of this book is that there are real pictures of the real bear in the front and back of the book.

Best Illustration: Drawn Together by Minh Lê

This is such a great book because it is all about how we do not need words to communicate with one another. This book is full of illustrations that are a mixture of two different styles that look great together.

Funniest: Please Don't Eat Me by Liz Climo

This book is about a rabbit who will do anything not to get eaten. In the end an unlikely friendship is made between the two that revolves around the bear not eating the rabbit.

Best Dr. Seuss: Happy Birthday to You! By Dr. Seuss

Growing up, this was my favorite Dr. Seuss book that I read all the time. (Even when it wasn’t my birthday. This book has the normal fun illustrations and writing that most Dr. Seuss books have while having a different story line. So, even if it isn’t your birthday, Happy Birthday to You.

Best Bedtime Book: Firefly Home by Jane Clarke and Britta Teckentrup

This is a fun interactive bedtime story. In the book, the child has to help guide Florence the firefly back home so you can say goodnight. Can you help Florence get back home?

Best Retelling of a Classic: Beauty and the Beast by Cynthia Rylant

Growing up I loved Beauty and the Beast, and this edition of the book has beautiful illustrations. This is also not the Disney version of the story but the version where Beauty has two sisters. This is a great book and I highly recommend it.

Best Classic: The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein

This book is a classic that I love and I believe most people have read. The book is all about a tree that continuously provides for the boy as he gets older. The tree continues to give of itself until there is nothing left of the tree.

Best Book with an Animal: The Box Turtle by Vanessa Roeder

This is a new book that we have on our New Shelf, and it is one of the cutest books ever. The book tells the story of a turtle that does not have a normal shell but a box. Over time, the turtle learns to love the box shell that he has.

Best Series: Private I by Tara Lazar

Growing up I loved the joke, “ Why is 6 afraid of 7? Because 7 ate 9.” This book turns this classic joke into a book all about the investigation as to what happened to 9. The books also help teach different numbers, letters, and punctuation. This is a great series and you should definitely give it a read.

My Favorite Growing Up: Miss Nelson Is Missing! by Harry Allard

This book tells the story of a missing teacher, and her class. Room 207 never respects Miss Nelson, so the substitute teacher Miss Swamp helps to teach the student how great of a teacher Miss Nelson is. Make sure while reading this book to look for clues as to where Miss Nelson went.
