A Single Shard

by Linda Sue Park

A Single Shard is set in 12th century Korea and is a coming-of-age story with themes of self-discovery, perseverance and finding family in unlikely places.  The writing style is lyrical, and to me, it felt as artistic as the pottery created within the story.  A true work of art.

The story encompasses many little stories within, giving the reader glimpses into every character's life.  We learn about what it is like to be an orphan.  We learn a little of what the potter's wife does all day while the potter creates his wares.  We learn about ancient pottery creation techniques.  We learn about an authentic Korean treasure, the Thousand Cranes Vase, which is mentioned in this book.   We learn about homelessness (but not hopelessness!).  We learn about the importance of friends and mentors.  We learn about simplicity and a job well done.  How working imparts dignity while stealing takes it away.

The beauty of this story is it showing how even if the world shatters you, a single shard is enough to express your value.
